Voice of The Gods

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 31 October 2007 09:27 (A review of Voice of the Gods (Age of the Five Trilogy, Book 3))

I feel conflicted. In the beginning of this novel or more like the first half of it I thought that the writer had finally started getting somewhere and I actually was enjoying it more then the first two novels. With the last, say, 200 pages though, I wasn’t feeling enjoyment as much as frustration. The fact of the matter is one of the characters is so moronic in that part you want to throw the book across the room. It doesn’t help that she keeps going over a question to which you’ve possibly figured out the answer in the first book (I know I did). It’s also quite frustrating because I can’t figure out if the author meant for her character to be so daft or she thinks her readers are so slow that this whole plot comes as a surprise. I think it’s the latter and that the writer unfortunately thinks she was being clever.
I also felt there could have been far more detail. Or possibly the first two novels could’ve been condensed into one novel as it didn’t seem like much was going in there and that most of the detail (of what in depth detail there was) was in most of third novel of the trilogy.
The ending was a bit on the pointless side too. Yes there was a point to it (a small one) but it ended up with too many questions as well which I never like at the end of a trilogy. It makes me question what the writers motives were and is this something she is going to continue with at some later date?
Here’s where I’m conflicted though. I enjoyed it to a degree. Obviously, because I finished it but I think it might be that I enjoyed the storyline not how the story was told. I liked the concept, not the delivery. Which is why I gave it a rating of 7 when I feel I should‘ve given it more. I enjoyed the concept, the story but I can’t overlook all the flaws.

Last Train to Freo (2006) review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 27 October 2007 07:39 (A review of Last Train to Freo (2006))

Makes you not want to take a train ride by yourself on the last train when the guards aren't around. Don't know what I was expecting but I enjoyed it especially with how it was done. Felt to me like they went through every character and the situation was seen from all perspectives not just one.

Black Dahlia review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 27 October 2007 07:32 (A review of Black Dahlia)

Not to be confused with The Black Dahlia directed by Brian De Palma although this idea is taken from The Black Dahlia murder. Black Dahlia is about 3 copycat killers recreating the Black Dahlia murder.

Sounds like it could be something worth watching but you know when you start watching a movie and within the first 5 - 10 minutes you'll know if it's a waste of your time? Well that's what happened here. For starters I wasn't impressed enough to want to see what followed and for me the beginning made me think of some sort of fetish/snuff porno and if I really wanted to watch that I would've gotten one of those rather then getting a horror movie and expecting a horror movie. I'm sure there was plenty of horror to follow after that but I didn't continue watching to find out.

Nacho Libre review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 24 October 2007 06:06 (A review of Nacho Libre)

I was surprised with this film. I was expecting something so stupid it would not make me laugh and wish I hadn't of spent my precious energy on it. Turned out to be the opposite. I actually laughed. Not only that it was a good quaint film although I think that if it wasn't for Jack Black's antics and facials it wouldn't have been as good. Don't get me wrong, the other characters added something to it, especially Jimenez, but still Black helped it along.

Candy review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 24 October 2007 05:48 (A review of Candy)

Candy is basically a love story tainted by drugs. If you want to know why you shouldn't shoot up watch this. I think it was done really well especially with the three stages, Heaven, Earth & Hell. Ledger did a great performance through out and Cornish, well I was unsure about her in the beginning but I felt she progressed as the movie did and turned out to do a good performance in the end.
Also I found myself wondering at the end why didn't this film get more publicity?

Are We There Yet? review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 22 October 2007 10:15 (A review of Are We There Yet?)

It's true that stupidity comes in all forms including movies and this is stupidity at it's greatest. Fair enough that the movie has some sort of moral lesson but how are you supposed to learn what it is when you can't even sit through it?
If you really must watch this I recommend not paying for it, watch it when it's on telly and perhaps go out and get yourself concussed first. It might help.

Stranger Than Fiction review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 22 October 2007 10:06 (A review of Stranger Than Fiction)

It's strange alright. It's been a few hours since I've watched it and I still can't figure out what to make of it (not as in confusion, just unsure how it made me feel). It's not that I didn't enjoy it but I think a part of me feels that not only was it pointless but at times that it was almost silly. In saying that, I'd still recommend it.

I've also come to expect Will Ferrell to do a certain quality of movie. Namely stupid, yet laughable, but on the verge of sheer annoyance & not being funny at the same time. If that's what you're expecting from this film you'll be extremely surprised. It's nothing like that, in fact I wouldn't even call it a straight out comedy as such but more of a black comedy/drama.
Another thing is how it's expected of the main character to die for a book. For a book. I found that a bit ludicrous actually. The acting was pretty well done though and I have to say I'm not going to forget the movie any time soon even if I'm still unsure about it.

Sunshine review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 21 October 2007 09:51 (A review of Sunshine)

Fantastic. I've been hanging out to see this movie and now that I finally have I'm far from disappointed. Great cast and acting, good visual effects and I loved the ending. I think this is one I'm definitely adding to my DVD collection.

Being Happy: A Review

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 19 October 2007 10:35 (A review of Being Happy!: A Handbook to Greater Confidence and Security)

When I think of this book the word crap comes to mind. Ok, to be honest a whole lot of other words come to mind but they aren't exactly people friendly. It's fair to say that yes I was frustrated at the idea of reading this book in the first place thanks to the reason that led me to attempt to read it (was given to me by a doctor as 'homework') but I was willing to give it a try. Well try as hard as I might I still only made it to page 20 something. It's 130 pages long and that's as far as I got and I have to say that says a lot.

For starters I would never recommend this to anyone who has been through a lot in life, dealt with depression before and has a fair idea about human behaviour. It's something that's more for the naive, innocent types or very young adults and even then it might be a bit grating and condescending. I suggest that if you ever see this book in a book store or library keep walking, don't even bother thinking about looking twice.

Last Of The Wilds

Posted : 17 years, 2 months ago on 17 October 2007 07:04 (A review of Last of the Wilds: Age of the Five Trilogy Book 2 )

I thought this was better then the first one. I admit it took me longer to get into but I realised that was because of my lack of enthusiasm for the first novel. I think one of the things that made a difference was the fact it was also told from the 'foes' perspective. It made it more interesting. Also compared to the first novel there was more intrigue and you realised nothing was really quite as it seemed. Although it was still fairly predictable in parts but I felt that was easily overlooked thanks to this being a more enjoyable read.
