Firestarter review

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2007 10:23 (A review of Firestarter)

I'm actually surprised with how much they stuck to the story line in this novel adaption. It was also comical when ever Charlie (Barrymore) or her father used their abilities. You could 'see' the effects from it ie; Charlie's hair blowing around and the father having to hold the side of his head. Quite amusing it was, but that's what you get for a 1980's movie.
I'd recommend it mostly for people who like cheesy, tacky thrillers if thriller is really the word for it.

Review

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2007 10:16 (A review of A Little Trip to Heaven)

Forest Whitaker did an excellent performance as usual and although the movie had a good storyline, some good little twists and the ending was excellent and unexpected, It didn't really do a great deal for me. I felt pretty neutral throughout the whole thing.

The Devil Wears Prada review

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2007 10:12 (A review of The Devil Wears Prada)

Not bad for a time filler. Other then that it felt to me as if it was just a little too drawn out and it tries to be comedic at times but just doesn't touch the funny bone at all. Thin & dull are the words that come to mind.
Although it might be entertaining for girly girls having a girls night in and wanting something to watch that doesn't take any effort to follow or matter if you miss some of it.

Transformers review

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 3 December 2007 09:40 (A review of Transformers)

I've been a bit wary with this fad to turn all my favourite childhood television shows/comics into movies so I must admit I was putting off watching this just to save being disappointed.

Now that I've finally watched it I wish I had of watched it sooner! I loved it right from the word go. One of those movies that I would of preferred to see on the big screen, but still fantastic. Lots of great action to hide the substandard acting and lack of dialogue (don't need much riveting dialogue in a movie like this though).
Only one thing really annoyed me. It was the attempts at humour which ended up being not particularly funny and slightly embarrassing. It's when they weren't trying so hard that I found myself having a little chuckle.
Other then that excellent for a highly polished action packed movie.

Borat Review

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 2 December 2007 11:18 (A review of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan)

Not as funny as I thought it would be, actually I found it to be a bit drawn out, but there were still some scenes that were, well not quite but more or less, bordering on hilarious. It is one of those movies where you really need a sense of humour, be very open minded and not mind a bit of stupidity (and a fair bit of nudity) to watch it without being offended.
So basically if you aren't open minded then there's no need to watch this because it is crude. Don't even bother contemplating it.

The Wooden Camera

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 30 November 2007 04:15 (A review of The Wooden Camera)

Predictable. Such a shame really but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad film. Just not surprising. Actually it entertained me enough to watch the whole thing and I have to admit I wasn't completely sure how it would turn out. I think that was mainly because I didn't expect them to do what they did, seeing as the characters were so young.
The acting however was on the mediocre side although Junior Singo (Madiba) was adorable so I guess that made up for the very annoying and bad acting from Dana de Agrella (Estelle).
I do feel that this movie could have gone in a different direction and possibly a better one (a less predictable one anyway) but like I mentioned before. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad film.
I should also add that just because this movie is South African doesn't mean it's not in English. So basically there are no subtitles to read for all the anti subtitle viewers.

Good Science

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 30 November 2007 03:54 (A review of It Ain't Necessarily So... Bro)

A good little read to pass the time. More for those who want a bit more scientific knowledge but don't want to bother with the technical jargon. Easy to absorb and there are some really interesting corrected 'myths' as well.
What also makes it more entertaining to read is if you not only know who Dr. Karl is but if you've seen him or heard him speak. While reading you can just imagine him sitting down having a conversation with you about these subjects as he has a tendency to write how he speaks.

Earth Angels

Posted : 16 years, 6 months ago on 1 November 2007 04:01 (A review of Earth Angels: A Pocket Guide for Incarnated Angels, Elementals, Starpeople, Walk-Ins, and Wizards)

To read something like this you have to be pretty open minded. Even then it’s no guarantee that you’re going to go along with it. For instance I consider myself to be very open minded and my reaction soon in to it was "Ok then..." The book was reminiscent of the days when I smoked a lot of wacky tobacky and believed in aliens. Needless to say I don’t do that anymore and don’t believe in aliens either so I guess my scepticism didn’t help.
Another thing, if you don’t believe in God or angels you might want to give this a miss too.
I believe that when an individual wants to pigeonhole humanity they can do it quite easily. In fact human beings do it all the time (eg; good people vs. bad people, nerds vs. jocks etc) and when it comes to pigeonholing people this woman has got it down pat. If you don’t fit into a realm no need to worry because you could be a walk in which means you fit into 3 realms and if that’s not the case then you might just be a dabbler. All bases covered. I would never recommend this for anyone who is impressionable, vulnerable or naïve to read because at some point everyone in their lives feel as if they don’t belong and at some point most of us feel different to the people around us, this is what this book addresses. Anyone vulnerable or naïve would be sucked in pretty easily.

Now as for positive feedback, I do have some. For the ones that believe in this sort of thing it’s set out rather easily to follow. It’s not like you’re being taught by a lecturer but by someone who knows how to deal with people. There is an index so you know which page to go to for which realm you are after and in each section there is a description of traits for that realm, life path and even employment. So a good little handbook for Earth Angels but not a book for anyone else.

Shrek the Third review

Posted : 16 years, 6 months ago on 31 October 2007 10:24 (A review of Shrek the Third)

Boring, slow, easy, clumsy and dodgy graphics basically sum it up for me. It seems to me that it wasn't as well made as the first one and also there were some changes. This one you can not go from character to character during game play, rather the character is chosen for you so you still get to play different characters just not by choice. Also there are quests during the game and a shop where you can buy lots of silly outfits for Shrek to wear. So yes, boring and short for adults.

For kids on the other hand, going by what a 9 year old said, "It's cool". Still easy but fun and a good thing about it, and if the kid playing it isn't impatient, is that it has pop up information on what the character should do and what the buttons do. Good for kids at that age where they are willing to read it all.

Jackass: Number Two review

Posted : 16 years, 6 months ago on 31 October 2007 09:42 (A review of Jackass: Number Two)

You’ll know without even watching this movie if you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t like rough housing or pranks well obviously you wouldn’t waste your time, but if on the other hand you find watching a bunch of guys deliberately hurting themselves and laughing their arses off about it amusing then watching it wouldn’t hurt. Or would it?
A whole bunch of larrikinism in this one. At least one thing (or perhaps two) to make you cringe and one to possibly make you laugh so hard you hurt yourself. I know I did. It doesn’t help that the boys laughter is so infectious.
Unfortunately I can’t really remember the first one enough to tell which is better but why should that matter? It’s not really a movie so to speak but just a movie length of Jackass. Enough said
