2046 review

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 10 August 2007 04:53 (A review of 2046)

I want the last two hours of my life back. Boring, pointless and slow. Oh so slow. Although a 2 hour length film, to me this felt like it went for 4 hours. 4 painfully drawn out hours. Every time I thought it was about to end (which happened a lot) it would unfortunately continue. I'm still trying to figure out not only the point to this film but if there was any lesson to be taken away from it. I believe there is a lesson to be learnt in every story but I fail to see it in this one.
A movie I'm going to, hopefully, forget soon and be all the happier for it.

Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt review

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 8 August 2007 05:14 (A review of Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt)

I watched this not knowing what to expect and honestly not expecting anything. I only watched it out of curiosity after picking it up three times at the video shop (on three seperate occasions, three's the lucky charm I guess) and I have to say I'm glad I rented it. I enjoyed it and for me, the fact that it was based on a true story made it more interesting. Also I found the 'transformation' actually one of the best werewolf ones so far surprisingly.

I have to say though if you are expecting a real thriller/horror sort of movie you might just be disappointed. Keep in mind that this was about a man who thought he was a werewolf not an actual werewolf film (werewolves don't exist obviously) so probably more of a drama on the verge of thriller then horror.

Hard Candy review

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 7 August 2007 06:00 (A review of Hard Candy)

Excellent. I love the concept. It's so refreshing watching something different for a change rather then the same ole story and I thought it was great how they did the end leaving you wondering certain things (of course I can't elaborate because I'll give it away). I thought it was a very good performance from Ellen Page (Hayley) too, especially seeing as the topic wasn't a pleasant one.

Envy review

Posted : 17 years, 4 months ago on 5 August 2007 02:09 (A review of Envy)

Not the best Aussie film I've seen but not too bad. I found it very hard to watch at times, mainly because I know the area it was filmed in. The acting wasn't exactly any good but the story line was and it had a good moral lesson plus a dramatic ending.

The Untouchables review

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 26 July 2007 05:18 (A review of The Untouchables)

This movie did nothing for me. I was actually bored the whole way through it (I left half way to go do something else, I was that bored) and the music grated on my nerves. Now I feel like 2 hours have passed me by and I wasn't able to do anything productive with them.

Giraffe: A Novel review

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 21 July 2007 01:38 (A review of Giraffe: A Novel)

In 1975 the worlds largest captive herd of Giraffes was destroyed. This novel follows the giraffes from when they were captured to their final destination in Czechoslovakia.

This actually happened and knowing that it makes it quite a depressing story to read. It's also told through the eyes of several characters (all real characters) including one of the giraffes, which I think is what drew me to it in the first place. I found the style of it a bit hard to read sometimes but all in all it was pretty good, depressing but good.

Hotel Rwanda (2004) review

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 20 July 2007 07:49 (A review of Hotel Rwanda (2004))

Great film but when it comes to the genocide in Rwanda I think Sometimes in April (not shown in Australia as a telly movie but as a movie) was actually more hard hitting then this one. Mainly because you got to see more of a portrayal of the atrocities and massacres where as this, to me, felt like it was more sheltered. Yes I'm aware that this was a true story but I don't think enough of the horror was portrayed. Although it could be good for people who want to watch something a long this line but are too sensitive to handle how bad it actually was.

Urgh

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 19 July 2007 06:30 (A review of The Nation)

Pathetic. Pathetic. Pathetic. I watched some of this for the first time last night and I have to say it was not funny. None of it was funny. I have come to the conclusion that Mick Malloy is a pathetic host and shouldn't be allowed to host. Why? Well for starters when Hilltop Hoods was on he not only didn't really seem that interested (actually he seemed flippant with all of his guests) but he asked the dumbest questions. Such as "Are you recognised overseas?" and "Is Adelaide the Australian hip hop scene?" Obviously he didn't do any research and isn't that what a good host/interviewer does? They research their guests? I believe so.
I'd be surprised if the show lasts but then again there are plenty of people out there without a clue as to what a good program should be like.

Excellent

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 19 July 2007 05:50 (A review of Stay)

Whoa what a trippy movie! I was so confused through the majority of it. I love this film. I know it probably doesn't seem like a good thing to be confused by a movie but it's hard to confuse me when it comes to films and the fact that I got answers at the end makes it a bloody good movie in my eyes. It was nothing like I was expecting at all. I thought the cinematography was excellent and the fact the scenes were cut together to match the characters confusion made a real difference to me. The scenes flowed and interconnected at first and then became confused and disjointed just like the main character did.
I'd put this one with Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect. Not because it was as good as them (very close though) but because it was in that same sort of concept and perspective.

Avalon review

Posted : 17 years, 5 months ago on 19 July 2007 01:51 (A review of Avalon)

I was quite surprised by this film. I was wary to begin with as it was directed by the same guy who did Ghost In The Shell, which I didn't like (mainly because it was manga) and seeing as this was his first 'live action' film I was a bit suspicious as to whether it would amount to much. Plus add in the story line which didn't help but I thought I'd watch it just to see.

Well I have to say, I was impressed. A bit confused as to why it was in Polish but impressed none the less. Given the concept it could have gone quite wrong but it turned out really well, the acting wasn't too bad and I loved how it gave me the impression of the past and then future, separately and together.
I'm seriously contemplating adding this to my DVD collection.
