Soul Survivors

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 26 January 2008 10:28 (A review of Soul Survivors)

For a mediocre predictable movie full of substandard acting and with a lame ending I actually enjoyed this. Whether it was because how the main character ran (Melissa Sagemiller) was amusing or because it was good for late night trash I don't know, I just enjoyed it.

Metropolis

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 24 January 2008 12:33 (A review of Metropolis)

If you're into film not just for the entertainment value but for the art of it then you might like watching this. Although if you want to watch it and sit through the whole thing might be best to watch it if you're in the mood for it and like black and white silent films. I must admit, even though I don't mind this type of film I was yawning a fair bit by the end of it but I was pretty tired so I blame it on that. I'm glad I've watched it and I did enjoy it to an extent especially the part with Hel the Machine Man and some of the imagery.

An American Tail

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 24 January 2008 12:19 (A review of An American Tail)

I loved this movie when I was a kid and still like it now. For starters it's cute. It's also short and sweet with lots of moral lessons in it which is perfect for young audiences with short attention spans.
The only real hang up I have is that the Russian mice don't always sound Russian, well that's the adults anyway and the young mice don't sound Russian at all, but I'm sure kids aren't going to notice that.

Atomik Circus

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 22 January 2008 12:15 (A review of Atomik Circus)

This movie was silly. Not the stupid type of silly but just plain ole silly. I missed the beginning of it but it was pretty easy to follow without seeing where it started. I also had no idea what the movie was about so when I started watching it it seemed like a comedic drama and then a comedic drama/horror with the introduction of these flying aliens that had tentacle like appendages and would attack and decapitate people. That was done really well I think. With all the fake blood and gore that is.
Then there was the dog which was silly and possibly a little amusing because it wasn't real.
Even though it was silly it wasn't bad to watch although I didn't like the ending. The ending was just stupid.

I Am Bob review

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 20 January 2008 06:12 (A review of I Am Bob)

As good as this may have been, and it was good sort of, I just could not get past the fact that no one could seem to recognise the real Bob Geldof compared to impersonaters. Especially when said impersonaters look nothing like him. It rubbed me the wrong way amongst other things and that's something I don't like in a film but at least that's a way to get you to remember it!

The Secret Life Of Happy People review

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 19 January 2008 12:47 (A review of The Secret Life Of Happy People)

Interesting film. From early on you just know there is something sinister going on and then you find out and I think it was the cruelty of it that kept me watching the whole thing. It was a good movie even if there was nothing remarkable about the acting, it was mainly the story line. By the end of the movie it just seems like everyone is getting screwed over and then there is the ending. I didn't mind it but I think it would've been fine if it had of finished at a certain point without that extra part but still not a bad movie. Interesting.

The Limey review

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 14 January 2008 04:42 (A review of The Limey)

I found this difficult to watch and if it wasn't on so late I still wouldn't have wanted to watch the whole thing. It was nauseating because the time line was all over the place. Not that it was hard to follow but it gets a bit much when it's jumping from present to past to future and to any one of those again for no real reason, even being in present tense while jumping to past and present, then not only playing scenes over again but also playing it from different angles. As if trying to be a cool artsy movie but just being nauseating instead.
Mind you if it hadn't of been nauseating I still wouldn't cared to have watched it to the end seeing as it's a guy whose daughter dies and he basically goes to get revenge. Not exactly original and not exactly riveting.

I Am Legend review

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 9 January 2008 09:14 (A review of I Am Legend)

If literature was food then this would be the starving persons feast, well for me it would be anyway because I devoured this and like all great books you enjoy it was over far too quickly (understandably, seeing as it's a novella) and yet if it went on any longer I don't think it would have been anywhere near the same.
There's an introduction by Stephen King (at least in my copy) with a line that I found to be very true "he will leave you wanting more" and if you watch the movie, do yourself a favour and read the book because in my opinion a movie could not do justice to this book especially with that ending.

A Perplexing Read

Posted : 16 years, 4 months ago on 7 January 2008 05:54 (A review of The Castle (Penguin Modern Classics))

I feel like I've been reading this book for 6 months when in actual fact it has been just under a month and after much struggling and determination I just can't keep reading it anymore and yet a part of me wants to keep reading it even though it's a torment. I feel as though if I stop reading I'm letting myself down and missing something. Perhaps it's because I want to know what's so good about Kafka. Why do I always seem to hear Kafka praised and nothing badly said about his writing? I have no idea, especially after reading this. I won't go as far as to say this was a waste of my time or a bad read it's just after reading 250 pages you'd like there to be some sort of point reached or what seems like a way to the point being made but I didn't feel like that. The characters are all mental and I felt that they were all just going around in cirlces. Then there's the dialogue. These are the longest conversations about the same thing said in a different way every few lines that I have ever read. Torment is the word for it and torment isn't the reason I read.

TMNT review

Posted : 16 years, 4 months ago on 5 January 2008 12:11 (A review of TMNT)

I loved this and I can't decide if it's because of it being a good movie or just because I loved the turtles as a kid, possibly the latter. Like the saying goes, love is blind.
Seriously though it was really good. Animation was excellent, I enjoyed the story and it was just the right length of time too. Plus I didn't dislike April in this either which is a big thing for me because in the original turtles she annoyed me beyond belief.
Also I think that if kids these days like the turtles then I'm sure they'll enjoy this movie (that's going by my nephew's reaction). Now I just hope they make another one because I know that would please my inner child greatly...
