Borat Review

Posted : 7 months, 3 weeks ago on 2 December 2007 05:18 (A review of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan)

Not as funny as I thought it would be, actually I found it to be a bit drawn out, but there were still some scenes that were, well not quite but more or less, bordering on hilarious. It is one of those movies where you really need a sense of humour, be very open minded and not mind a bit of stupidity (and a fair bit of nudity) to watch it without being offended.
So basically if you aren't open minded then there's no need to watch this because it is crude. Don't even bother contemplating it.

The Wooden Camera

Posted : 7 months, 4 weeks ago on 29 November 2007 10:15 (A review of The Wooden Camera)

Predictable. Such a shame really but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad film. Just not surprising. Actually it entertained me enough to watch the whole thing and I have to admit I wasn't completely sure how it would turn out. I think that was mainly because I didn't expect them to do what they did, seeing as the characters were so young.
The acting however was on the mediocre side although Junior Singo (Madiba) was adorable so I guess that made up for the very annoying and bad acting from Dana de Agrella (Estelle).
I do feel that this movie could have gone in a different direction and possibly a better one (a less predictable one anyway) but like I mentioned before. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad film.
I should also add that just because this movie is South African doesn't mean it's not in English. So basically there are no subtitles to read for all the anti subtitle viewers.

Good Science

Posted : 7 months, 4 weeks ago on 29 November 2007 09:54 (A review of It Ain't Necessarily So... Bro)

A good little read to pass the time. More for those who want a bit more scientific knowledge but don't want to bother with the technical jargon. Easy to absorb and there are some really interesting corrected 'myths' as well.
What also makes it more entertaining to read is if you not only know who Dr. Karl is but if you've seen him or heard him speak. While reading you can just imagine him sitting down having a conversation with you about these subjects as he has a tendency to write how he speaks.

Earth Angels

Posted : 8 months, 3 weeks ago on 31 October 2007 11:01 (A review of Earth Angels: A Pocket Guide for Incarnated Angels, Elementals, Starpeople, Walk-Ins, and Wizards)

To read something like this you have to be pretty open minded. Even then it’s no guarantee that you’re going to go along with it. For instance I consider myself to be very open minded and my reaction soon in to it was "Ok then..." The book was reminiscent of the days when I smoked a lot of wacky tobacky and believed in aliens. Needless to say I don’t do that anymore and don’t believe in aliens either so I guess my scepticism didn’t help.
Another thing, if you don’t believe in God or angels you might want to give this a miss too.
I believe that when an individual wants to pigeonhole humanity they can do it quite easily. In fact human beings do it all the time (eg; good people vs. bad people, nerds vs. jocks etc) and when it comes to pigeonholing people this woman has got it down pat. If you don’t fit into a realm no need to worry because you could be a walk in which means you fit into 3 realms and if that’s not the case then you might just be a dabbler. All bases covered. I would never recommend this for anyone who is impressionable, vulnerable or naïve to read because at some point everyone in their lives feel as if they don’t belong and at some point most of us feel different to the people around us, this is what this book addresses. Anyone vulnerable or naïve would be sucked in pretty easily.

Now as for positive feedback, I do have some. For the ones that believe in this sort of thing it’s set out rather easily to follow. It’s not like you’re being taught by a lecturer but by someone who knows how to deal with people. There is an index so you know which page to go to for which realm you are after and in each section there is a description of traits for that realm, life path and even employment. So a good little handbook for Earth Angels but not a book for anyone else.

Shrek the 3rd review

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 31 October 2007 05:24 (A review of Shrek the 3rd)

Boring, slow, easy, clumsy and dodgy graphics basically sum it up for me. It seems to me that it wasn't as well made as the first one and also there were some changes. This one you can not go from character to character during game play, rather the character is chosen for you so you still get to play different characters just not by choice. Also there are quests during the game and a shop where you can buy lots of silly outfits for Shrek to wear. So yes, boring and short for adults.

For kids on the other hand, going by what a 9 year old said, "It's cool". Still easy but fun and a good thing about it, and if the kid playing it isn't impatient, is that it has pop up information on what the character should do and what the buttons do. Good for kids at that age where they are willing to read it all.

Jackass Number Two review

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 31 October 2007 04:42 (A review of Jackass Number Two)

You’ll know without even watching this movie if you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t like rough housing or pranks well obviously you wouldn’t waste your time, but if on the other hand you find watching a bunch of guys deliberately hurting themselves and laughing their arses off about it amusing then watching it wouldn’t hurt. Or would it?
A whole bunch of larrikinism in this one. At least one thing (or perhaps two) to make you cringe and one to possibly make you laugh so hard you hurt yourself. I know I did. It doesn’t help that the boys laughter is so infectious.
Unfortunately I can’t really remember the first one enough to tell which is better but why should that matter? It’s not really a movie so to speak but just a movie length of Jackass. Enough said

Voice of The Gods

Posted : 8 months, 4 weeks ago on 31 October 2007 04:27 (A review of Voice of the Gods (Age of the Five Trilogy, Book 3))

I feel conflicted. In the beginning of this novel or more like the first half of it I thought that the writer had finally started getting somewhere and I actually was enjoying it more then the first two novels. With the last, say, 200 pages though, I wasn’t feeling enjoyment as much as frustration. The fact of the matter is one of the characters is so moronic in that part you want to throw the book across the room. It doesn’t help that she keeps going over a question to which you’ve possibly figured out the answer in the first book (I know I did). It’s also quite frustrating because I can’t figure out if the author meant for her character to be so daft or she thinks her readers are so slow that this whole plot comes as a surprise. I think it’s the latter and that the writer unfortunately thinks she was being clever.
I also felt there could have been far more detail. Or possibly the first two novels could’ve been condensed into one novel as it didn’t seem like much was going in there and that most of the detail (of what in depth detail there was) was in most of third novel of the trilogy.
The ending was a bit on the pointless side too. Yes there was a point to it (a small one) but it ended up with too many questions as well which I never like at the end of a trilogy. It makes me question what the writers motives were and is this something she is going to continue with at some later date?
Here’s where I’m conflicted though. I enjoyed it to a degree. Obviously, because I finished it but I think it might be that I enjoyed the storyline not how the story was told. I liked the concept, not the delivery. Which is why I gave it a rating of 7 when I feel I should‘ve given it more. I enjoyed the concept, the story but I can’t overlook all the flaws.

Last Train to Freo review

Posted : 9 months ago on 27 October 2007 02:39 (A review of Last Train to Freo)

Makes you not want to take a train ride by yourself on the last train when the guards aren't around. Don't know what I was expecting but I enjoyed it especially with how it was done. Felt to me like they went through every character and the situation was seen from all perspectives not just one.

Black Dahlia review

Posted : 9 months ago on 27 October 2007 02:32 (A review of Black Dahlia)

Not to be confused with The Black Dahlia directed by Brian De Palma although this idea is taken from The Black Dahlia murder. Black Dahlia is about 3 copycat killers recreating the Black Dahlia murder.

Sounds like it could be something worth watching but you know when you start watching a movie and within the first 5 - 10 minutes you'll know if it's a waste of your time? Well that's what happened here. For starters I wasn't impressed enough to want to see what followed and for me the beginning made me think of some sort of fetish/snuff porno and if I really wanted to watch that I would've gotten one of those rather then getting a horror movie and expecting a horror movie. I'm sure there was plenty of horror to follow after that but I didn't continue watching to find out.

Nacho Libre review

Posted : 9 months ago on 24 October 2007 01:06 (A review of Nacho Libre)

I was surprised with this film. I was expecting something so stupid it would not make me laugh and wish I hadn't of spent my precious energy on it. Turned out to be the opposite. I actually laughed. Not only that it was a good quaint film although I think that if it wasn't for Jack Black's antics and facials it wouldn't have been as good. Don't get me wrong, the other characters added something to it, especially Jimenez, but still Black helped it along.
