Interesting...

Posted : 10 months, 2 weeks ago on 11 January 2009 07:25 (A review of Changing Climates, Changing Times)

Idea wise this was a good one, showing how our world and society will be in 65 years time. I liked how it didn't only concentrate on one area, it included France, Africa, Canada and mentioned a lot of other places.
While the movie used a story line to get the message across it was also interspersed with tidbits of information, basically half documentary, half drama movie.
Yet for all it's good features it had some major flaws. For instance dates, ages of characters, were out. The movie was set in 2075 and yet some of the ages of the characters didn't match up. One character was meant to be 20 but was apparently born in 2058, then there were dates mentioned for events and the amount in years since mentioned did not add up.
There was also something very wrong with some of the accents, particularly the French and Hamburg ones, to me they sounded the same and the French characters didn't sound French at all. It's one thing to have all the characters, even in different countries, use English but it's not good if it detracts form the movie.
The most major flaw was, it wasn't a very compelling movie, seeing as I could not bring myself to sit there through out the whole thing because it was putting me to sleep. Shame that.

Snow Queen

Posted : 1 year, 7 months ago on 31 March 2008 12:08 (A review of Snow Queen)

"Real cold will kill you dead, just like that." No kidding. With lines like that you know you're in for some riveting dialogue. Yes I'm being sarcastic. This movie was odd and not in a good way. It was also a tad stupid and slightly painful to watch at times and yet I couldn't look away.
First of all there is a polar bear that talks and who gives the impression that he has a smacking fetish. Then there is the horrible acting, the psycho spring lady with really bad fashion sense, a boy magician that sounded so much like a girl (plus couldn't act to save his life) that I had to look extra hard at just to make sure I wasn't being deceived, robbers who were meant to portray autumn (what the?) and then there was Bridget Fonda.
I can't quite accept Bridget Fonda as a villain. Sure the notion grew on me as the film progressed but to me it was like she was play acting or it was some sort of parody. I kept expecting her to break out of character and be all light and fluffy. I think she exudes too much innocence for a roll like that.
Add into that this stupid obsession with a mirror that you don't get to find out why she is so obsessed with until about the last 10 - 15 minutes. That bugged me.
All in all I think the polar bear was my favourite character as he turned out to be the most convincing of the lot.

Don't Eat While You Watch

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 30 January 2008 06:35 (A review of The Man Whose Arms Exploded)

For anyone who is contemplating using steroids I think you should watch this. Not that it's jam packed with information but it has enough to show you just what could happen and it definitely drums it in. It's basically about this body builder who used steroids to a point where he ended up getting infections and basically his bicep "exploded". Includes a really gross clip of him performing surgery on himself (as you do when you're a moron). It also includes interviews with other body builders so even though the story's main focus is the exploding guy he isn't the only numb nut on there.
Now if you're like me and the whole body building industry makes you a tad sick well either you don't want to watch this or if you do, watch it with caution. Chances are it's going to make you nice and queasy.

Hogfather review

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 25 December 2007 04:49 (A review of Hogfather)

I really enjoyed this. A dark quirky fantasy with a twist to Christmas being Santa is some sort of Hog man. I also loved Death and the serious character of Suzanne. I haven't been able to read Terry Pratchett's Discworld so can't say if it was adapted appropriately but after watching this mini series I know I want to read his work more so then before. A good little fantasy that I think Harry Potter fans could be happy with and anyone who wants something different then the usual Christmas fanfare

Urgh

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 19 July 2007 01:30 (A review of "The Nation")

Pathetic. Pathetic. Pathetic. I watched some of this for the first time last night and I have to say it was not funny. None of it was funny. I have come to the conclusion that Mick Malloy is a pathetic host and shouldn't be allowed to host. Why? Well for starters when Hilltop Hoods was on he not only didn't really seem that interested (actually he seemed flippant with all of his guests) but he asked the dumbest questions. Such as "Are you recognised overseas?" and "Is Adelaide the Australian hip hop scene?" Obviously he didn't do any research and isn't that what a good host/interviewer does? They research their guests? I believe so.
I'd be surprised if the show lasts but then again there are plenty of people out there without a clue as to what a good program should be like.

What A Sad State Of Affairs

Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 28 June 2007 02:08 (A review of "Torchwood")

It would be nice if there were more decent sci fi shows but unfortunately we get stuck with this tripe. I knew it would be a waste of my time to watch it just by seeing the previews. For starters the acting isn't up to par and the witticisms are embarrassing. Especially the ones made by Captain Harkness (John Barrowman) who is even more embarrassing because he gives the impression of an arrogant sleaze. Between Harkness trying to act like a sexy devil and the ridiculous faces Gwen Cooper (Eve Miles) makes, it's enough to make you cringe.

Besides do you really think a show is going to be worth watching when it comes up with a story line about a sex addicted alien? A sex addicted alien that doesn't have it's own body but must travel to another planet just to find a host body? I think not.

In Justice review

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 18 April 2007 12:23 (A review of In Justice)

I think it says a lot about a show when they can't get their facts straight. It makes me question their professionalism and seriousness when researching. Eg; Two of the characters sitting in what is obviously a Dutch Waffle House. You can tell just how Dutch it is by the tulips, windmills and the outfit the waitress had on. The mistake was the waitress saying good morning in German.

Fortunately the show isn't very engaging so I wasn't very disappointed. A good concept but not pulled off well enough to keep you wanting to catch the next episode

Bondi Rescue review

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 9 April 2007 05:33 (A review of Bondi Rescue)

If a handful of blokes can rescue 30 people in 5mins it's just amazing. These guys are heroes and it just goes to show how dangerous the ocean can be and how much goes on at the beach!
