Movie reviews by MidnightHotel Rwanda review

(A review of Hotel Rwanda)Great film but when it comes to the genocide in Rwanda I think Sometimes in April (not shown in Australia as a telly movie but as a movie) was actually more hard hitting then this one. Mainly because you got to see more of a portrayal of the atrocities and massacres where as this, to me, felt like it was more sheltered. Yes I'm aware that this was a true story but I don't think enough of the horror was portrayed. Although it could be good for people who want to watch something a long this line but are too sensitive to handle how bad it actually was. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Excellent

(A review of Stay)Whoa what a trippy movie! I was so confused through the majority of it. I love this film. I know it probably doesn't seem like a good thing to be confused by a movie but it's hard to confuse me when it comes to films and the fact that I got answers at the end makes it a bloody good movie in my eyes. It was nothing like I was expecting at all. I thought the cinematography was excellent and the fact the scenes were cut together to match the characters confusion made a real difference to me. The scenes flowed and interconnected at first and then became confused and disjointed just like the main character did. I'd put this one with Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect. Not because it was as good as them (very close though) but because it was in that same sort of concept and perspective. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Avalon review

(A review of Avalon)I was quite surprised by this film. I was wary to begin with as it was directed by the same guy who did Ghost In The Shell, which I didn't like (mainly because it was manga) and seeing as this was his first 'live action' film I was a bit suspicious as to whether it would amount to much. Plus add in the story line which didn't help but I thought I'd watch it just to see. Well I have to say, I was impressed. A bit confused as to why it was in Polish but impressed none the less. Given the concept it could have gone quite wrong but it turned out really well, the acting wasn't too bad and I loved how it gave me the impression of the past and then future, separately and together. I'm seriously contemplating adding this to my DVD collection. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Smokin' Aces review

(A review of Smokin' Aces)I didn't really feel anything with this movie. Nothing bad, nothing good. Sure there was plenty of action and plenty of stars but that doesn't mean it's going to be a good movie. Seeing as I feel completely indifferent to this movie it's hard to say if it was bad or not. You just have to watch it to make up your own mind. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Musa review
Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago on 14 July 2007 02:21
(A review of Musa)Unfortunately I couldn't watch the whole movie. I think when a movie is that long (almost 3 hours) it should be a very engaging movie so you have a good reason for sitting around for such a long time. This movie just wasn't engaging enough for me. I made it just shy of the 2 hour mark before I started to get bored so that's something, I guess 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Why? Why? Why?
Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago on 13 July 2007 01:15
(A review of Cube)This could've gotten a higher rating from me but it didn't because I never found out the why. I like to, nay have to, find out why. I find it frustrating. Although I realise that was the whole point, but still... Great concept though and it's quite interesting to watch how the different characters react and interact. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
I want the slugs!
Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago on 10 July 2007 01:48
(A review of Flushed Away)This is my new favourite animation. It's funny right from the word go (the slugs are the best), the storyline works out really well and it's far better then the latest animations that have been going. Barnyard & Madagascar for examples. It reminds me of a cross between Shrek (obviously because the same people who created Shrek created this one too) and Wallace & Gromit. And it really is a fluke that I got to watch it because I hadn't even heard of it before (they had it playing at the video shop)! I think a lot of people are going to miss out on this one which is a shame because it is really enjoyable. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Apocalypto review
Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago on 10 July 2007 01:28
(A review of Apocalypto)I was a bit surprised with this film. Not in the sense that I thought it would be horrible and found out it was stunning instead. No. I was surprised because I thought it would be far more violent. I'd heard from several places/people that it was a very violent film. I didn't find it that violent. In saying that, if you aren't used to violence I wouldn't recommend watching it while eating, it's just for someone who is used to watching violent films I was expecting to cringe. Not that any of that is a bad thing. The movie was actually stunning. I'm so glad I watched it seeing as I wasn't going to (it's an anti Mel Gibson thing). The casting was perfection, the costumes were awesome and the cinematography was fantastic. I just feel sad for all the people who can't handle subtitles and are going to miss out on an amazing film! 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Prozac Nation review

(A review of Prozac Nation)I thought this was a beautiful movie. Harrowing but beautiful. For someone who has suffered through depression the portrayal of it was spot on and Christina Ricci did a marvelous performance 0 comments, Reply to this entry
Papillon review

(A review of Papillon)This was actually far better then I thought it would be. Great acting by Steve McQueen who played such a tireless character, especially when it came to the solitary part of the movie. This is a definite classic. 0 comments, Reply to this entry
